Prenatal Air Pollution Exposure and Risk of Autism: New Insight from ECHO Cohorts
Key Takeaways:
- In the past decade, air pollution has substantially declined in the US because of policies informed by environmental monitoring and research.
- A recent analysis of EPA data shows a reversal of trends, confirming that a national decade-long trend toward better air quality might be reversing.
- Concerns are increasing regarding adverse health outcomes of low-level air pollution.
- Given the emerging evidence that shows the potential role of environmental chemical exposures in the etiology of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), the need to identify air pollution exposure as a modifiable risk factor of ASD is warranted.
